Beirut Beiti [Beirut, my home] is a user-generated online advocacy platform and tool that helps Beirutis document & activate existing public spaces in their city and create new ones.

Public spaces can be defined as active accessible spaces that promote social activities that are spontaneous, happen between people, and create social spaces of greetings, conversations & communal activity.

This particular collaboration began with our everyday frustrations of an unhomely city. Our Beirut, as opposed to the bustling metropolis of our parents and grandparents, is a city that offers very few active and accessible public spaces. Having worked on several temporary public installations during our years at architecture school, Beirut Beiti began as an attempt to better understand public space in Beirut.

Beirut Beiti was launched as a beta version as part of Beirut Design Week 2018. Moving forward, we would love your feedback, suggestions, and thoughts as they are pivotal for the evolution of a platform that inherently relies on bottom up, grass roots, design activism and civic engagement.

The platform came about in response to our lived experiences in Beirut and to three key questions:

What defines a public space in Beirut?

Why does Beirut have a very limited number of active public spaces? Has this always been the case?

How can the denizens of this city work together to activate existing public spaces, and create new ones?
